A recent report by El Nuevo Día titled “Puerto Rico: The Food Crisis We Don’t Want to See“ [link for this hyperlink: underscores the fragility of our current systems. To move from crisis to independence, we must reclaim the very foundation of our food system: the seed.
The Seed Independence Project is joining in the movement of reawakening. Our mission is to secure the liberation of our food and medicinal heritage by fostering a multi-generational exchange between growers on the archipelago and throughout the diaspora. We believe that our cultural traditions should thrive wherever our people find soil.
How the Project Works We remove the impediments to growth—lack of access and lack of resources—through direct advocacy and seed distribution.
- Focus: Securing rare heritage crops and medicinal plants.
- Equity: Rooted in mutual aid, we offer an equity-based sliding scale for postal costs to ensure that financial barriers never prevent a seed from being planted.
- Inclusivity: This project is open to all. We invite everyone who values the preservation of ancestral land and food sovereignty to apply.
Join the Exchange Our seeds are our history, and they are our future. Help us bridge the distance between time zones and generations.
